we are all dogs in hot cars, 2024, sugar, each mask 30 x 28 x 15 cm
We are all dogs in hot cars is an installation consisting of uncanny, cartoon-like masks cast from sugar, drawing inspiration from retro animation aesthetics, but also from fetish dog masks. These sculptures were shown alongside a video installation composed of several smartphones and tablets.
On the screens, short video loops played old cartoon scenes, capturing protagonists caught in chaotic motion - seemingly fleeing or frantically chasing something, without clear direction or resolution. Sugar functions in this work as a material metaphor the contradictions of late-stage capitalist society. It is in nearly every processed food and seemingly harmless, yet its harmful effects on our bodies and nervous systems are well documented. In this context, the sugar rush parallels the continuous stream of short-form digital content we consume through social media formats. Both are easily and continuously consumed, highly addictive, and designed to sustain a constant state of stimulation.
